Moving From Adobe Aero to Zapworks: Your AR Journey Continues

Written by Dave Mather | Sep 22, 2025 2:06:16 PM

Adobe Aero is shutting down—but your AR projects don’t have to.

On August 7th, 2025, Adobe announced that Adobe Aero will be permanently shut down on November 6th, 2025, with full decommissioning of files and user data by December 16th. This decision, explained in a community post by Adobe employee Jeremie Noguer, means that Aero scenes (.real files) will stop working, and all Aero user data will be removed from servers. For creators and businesses who’ve invested years into Aero, this feels like the rug being pulled out from under them.

But here’s the good news: this is not the end of your AR projects. In fact, it’s an opportunity to give them a stronger, more flexible home in tools built for the long term.

That’s where Zapworks Designer and Mattercraft come in.

Don’t Fear! Zapworks Designer and Mattercraft Are Here

At Zappar, we’ve been building web-based augmented, virtual and mixed reality tools for over a decade. With Zapworks Designer (our intuitive, no-code AR builder) and Mattercraft (our advanced, web-native immersive 3D development environment), you have two powerful options to continue your AR development and even expand on what you started in Aero.

Both tools keep accessibility at the forefront: your experiences run straight in the browser across smartphones, desktops and headsets, instantly accessible via QR code or link.

Learn how to move your projects from Adobe Aero by watching the tutorial below.

Tutorial: Moving from Adobe Aero to Zapworks

If you're coming to Zapworks Designer or Mattercraft cold, I'd suggest starting your journey by watching the tutorial above, which covers:

  • Exporting Assets: Learn how to export an Aero project (like the Origami Forest), then rename the .reel file to .zip to access all assets.
  • Rebuilding in Zapworks Designer: Step through setting up a new project, uploading assets, adding animations, and using features like text, buttons, video, particles, and tracking.
  • Advanced Tools in Mattercraft: Explore interactivity, physics, and detailed animation controls like keyframes and easing to build richer experiences.
  • Effects and AI Assistance in Mattercraft: Add layered effects, like snow particles, and use Mattercraft AI Assistant for suggestions or auto-generated elements such as bouncing snowballs.

Keep reading for a more complete breakdown of each tool and how they compare to Adobe Aero.

Zapworks Designer: The Fast Track to AR Creation

Zapworks Designer is our no-code, drag-and-drop AR tool designed for speed and simplicity. If you're a lifelong Aero user, you should feel right at home in Designer with its intuitive UI, templates, easy interactivity and rich media support. Like Aero, it empowers creators without requiring deep coding knowledge;  however, Designer goes further with:

  1. Templates to accelerate builds: world tracking, image tracking, face tracking, and more.
  2. Rich media support: 3D models, images, video, buttons, transparent video, and particles.
  3. Easy interactivity: add actions like animations or sounds on tap, all without code.
  4. Instant previews & publishing: scan a QR code to see your work in AR within seconds.

Similarities to Adobe Aero

  • Drag-and-drop interface
  • Actions/triggers system (play animations, sounds, etc.)
  • Designed for instant access and reach —anyone with a smartphone can view your work

Differences

  • Web-native: no need for a standalone app, just a browser
  • More templates and tracking types (face, image, world)
  • Deploy across iOS and Android

Moving Projects from Adobe Aero to Designer

The good news: your Aero assets aren’t locked away. You can export them and rebuild your project in Designer:

  1. In Aero, go to File → Export → Real.

  2. Rename the .real file to .zip and unzip it to access your assets.

  3. In Designer, create a new project (start with the World Tracking template).

  4. Upload your 3D assets into Designer’s library.

  5. Drag and drop them into the scene, then reposition and animate.

  6. Add any text, buttons, or videos you need.

  7. Preview instantly, then publish with a click.

It feels familiar to Aero, but you’re now building on a platform designed for longevity.

Mattercraft: Advanced AR for Bigger Ideas

For creators who want to push their immersive 3D experiences further, Mattercraft gives you the power to build interactive, physics-driven, spatially complex AR, VR or mixed reality scenes—still all web-native.

Key features include:

  • Behaviours & animations: Create looping or triggered actions on any object.
  • Keyframe animation editor: Animate movements, add easing, and layer effects.
  • Particles & physics: From snow to bouncing objects, add realism and playfulness.
  • AI Assistant: Generate ideas, automate tasks, and get help as you build.
  • Advanced tracking: VPS (visual positioning system) for location-based AR.

Similarities to Adobe Aero

  • Visual editing interface
  • Trigger-based interactivity
  • Easy preview and publishing
  • World and location-based AR tracking

Differences

  • Web-first 3D development environment
  • Far more control over animations and interactions
  • Built-in particle and physics engines
  • Code when you want, drag-and-drop when you don't
  • Deploy to smartphones,  desktops and headsets
  • AI-powered assistant to speed up builds
  • Import NPM packages into your project

Moving Projects from Aero to Mattercraft

The process is similar to Designer, but Mattercraft gives you more freedom to expand:

  1. Export your Aero .real file → rename to .zip → unzip assets.

  2. Open Mattercraft and start a project using the World Tracking 3D model template.

  3. Import your assets into the project hierarchy.

  4. Use the animation panel to recreate Aero animations—or extend them further.

  5. Add behaviors (e.g., looping animations, on-click interactions).

  6. Enhance with particles, physics, or even VPS-based location tracking.

  7. Live preview in AR, then publish instantly.

👉 If you could build it in Aero, you can build it (and more) in Mattercraft.
