ZapWorks Halloween Competition Winner

This October we challenged you to create a spooky Halloween themed AR experience that would shake our judges to their very core. We had some incredible entries so naturally, choosing a winner was very difficult.

By David Mather, Marketing Manager - Zappar

Without further ado, our 2017 Halloween AR competition winner is Len van der Westhuizen from The Burping Turtle with his super spooky seance experience.

1st Place - The Dark Sinfulness - AR Seance

Prize: $500 + a ZapBox kit
Tool: ZapWorks Studio

Using the target image as the ouija board, Len was able to create a chilling AR experience that skillfully incorporated audio, 3D models and user interactivity.

Connell Gauld, co-founder and CTO of Zappar said of the winning entry:

"Len's Halloween seance is a worthy winner of our first ZapWorks user competition. The story is well constructed, and I loved the way the target image / ouiji board was brought to life with the pointer. The ghost rising from the table was a real surprise, and the audio does a great job of creating a spooky atmosphere. Everyone was really impressed. Congratulations!"

2nd Place - Jasper's Worst Nightmare

Prize: $250 + a ZapBox kit
Tool: ZapWorks Studio

Peter built this Halloween themed endless runner for our competition, finishing a close second. Play as Jasper as he attempts to escape from an evil spirit whilst avoiding obstacles in his path.

Dr Simon Taylor, co-founder and Research Director at Zappar said of Peter's entry:

"Jasper's Worst Nightmare is a fantastic example of a mini-game built using ZapWorks Studio. I thought the graphics were really excellent and he should be proud of how it came out. Peter is clearly a talented developer and we can't wait to see what he produces next."

A big thank you to all our entrants. Do you think that the judges made the correct decision?

We had a great time running our first ever ZapWorks user competition, and we are excited to do more in the future! Keep your eyes peeled for the next one which we’ll be announcing shortly.
