In our latest peak behind the scenes at Zappar HQ we’re speaking to Creative Director Lucas Perez. Lucas, is an alumi of the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University (like two of the Zappar founders — Dr Simon Taylor and Connell Gauld) and was one of the first hires here at Zappar, almost five years ago.

Lucas was recently been promoted to the role of Creative Director so we thought now would be a great time to talk to him about his role managing a team of designers, coders and “scene assemblers” (scene assembly is a role specific to Zappar that requires both left brain and right brain, code and design, and is something that Lucas excelled at with his unique skill set across these two disciplines). He’s Spanish, we love him and we know you will too. Why not get acquainted below?

How many years have you been working in tech?

It's coming up to five years now!

What’s the first thing you do when you get into the office?

Make myself a really strong cup of coffee and read some emails.

Tell us three things you do every day in your role:

Photoshopping
Animating
Scripting
In no particular order...

Best thing about working at Zappar:

It's got to be the people. Best. Team. Ever.

If you weren’t working in tech, where would we find you?

Probably in South America, you know, "finding" myself.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received – and who gave you it?

You're more likely to regret what you don't do more than what you do do... Or something like that! I can't remember exactly who told me this (or did I read it somewhere?) but it's stuck with me!

How do you relax after a long day?

A nice session at the gym to blow off some steam.

First gig you ever attended:

Madonna. I was 9 and my mum couldn't convince anyone else in the family to go with her... Please don't judge..

What (or who) inspires you?

That moment I meet someone new and they ask me what I do for a living. After a quick explanation about AR from me, they give me a blank stare and suddenly say something like "OH! Like that thing I saw at...." then they mention an actual project we've done. Such a great feeling!

You get given one super human power – what would you pick?

Teleporting. Say 'hello' to cheap holidays!

Piece of tech you couldn’t live without:

Headphones. Music keeps me going throughout the day.

Best AR innovation you’ve seen lately:

The Microsoft HoloLens looks like it's got alot of potential!

Number one smartphone app:

Citymapper has saved my neck so many times!

What do you think is the best technology innovation of the last 100 years?

Mobile Internet hands down! Imagine how many heated arguments at the pub have been resolved by Google-ing a factoid!
